Every year hundreds of thousands of people make a goal to improve their health and fitness. The sad part is most of these people fail in their attempts. While setting out to get in better shape is no easy task, it is not impossible either. Where do most people go wrong you’re probably asking. The answer is relatively simple. They simply are not tough enough. I’m not talking physically tough as in moving heavy objects but I’m talking about mental toughness. Mental toughness as in the ability to push yourself beyond what you think your limits are.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you are trying to achieve a health and fitness goal:
- Are you in the comfort zone with your plan to achieve your health and fitness goal?
- Is your plan the same as it was a long time ago with little or no change to it?
- Are you worried all the time about failing your health and fitness goal?
- Do you feel like you have been doing your plan for too long and just want the results quickly?
- Do you feel like you have your plan totally under control and don’t need anyone’s help?
If you answered yes to 3 or more of these you may need to mentally toughen up. Now let’s look at each question a little more in depth and get a better understanding of their meanings.
Are you in the comfort zone with your plan to achieve your health and fitness goal?
While trying to achieve your fitness goal should not be mission impossible, you should not feel like you’re taking things easy and just cruising along. Any type of health and fitness goal is going to require some work. With work most of the time comes some level of un-comfort. I have a saying that I often tell my clients and or fitness team. If you really want to achieve something “Get comfortable being uncomfortable!” For a lot of people, growth and progress begins at the start of being uncomfortable.
Is your plan the same as it was a long time ago with little or no change to it?
“With progress comes change” If you want to achieve something, then at some point there will be an inevitable change. No matter what your goal is, you are going to have to make constant changes to get there. While doing the same thing over and over at first is good because it creates consistency, over a longer period of time changes will have to be made. The body eventually adapts to the same stimulus over and over and the only way to advance is to change that up.
Are you worried all the time about failing your health and fitness goal?
If you are worried about failing all of the time, you shouldn’t be. Failure is actually a good thing. The best thing about failure is it actually got you to try something you might not have normally tried. Failure also teaches you to assess your mistakes and how to improve upon them for the next time. If there is even a slight chance of succeeding then the possibility of failure is well worth the risk.
.Do you feel like you have been doing your plan for too long and just want the results quickly?
The health and fitness life is not a sprint but a marathon. When you set a health and fitness goal, think of the tortoise and the hare. In other words just because something is done quicker, it doesn’t always mean it will have a better outcome. For anyone to achieve a fitness goal, it takes time and patience. One of the biggest reasons people fail with their fitness goals is they simply do not have enough patience. You see it all of the time at the beginning of a new year. People make health goals, decide to invest time towards them, and when it does not happen after a few weeks they give up. Always remember a lot of the well- built bodies that are around, were built thru a lot of time, effort and patience.
Do you feel like you have your plan totally under control and don’t need anyone’s help?
The first thing people should realize is they are not superheroes. We cannot do it all by ourselves, even the justice league needs each other’s help from time to time. It is never a bad thing to get help. An outside perspective can always give a different view on things. Another point is, with getting help you may actually learn something new. By watching, listening and learning you may gain some valuable insight and knowledge. If someone offers help at the very least hear what they have to say before you shun their opinion.
